TMJ or TMD
TMJ problems or TMD can occur from a variety of causes. Problems can occur with the temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. These bones are situated just in front of each ear. However many of the surrounding tissues can also be impacted leading to pain in the jaw, muscles of the face and neck, and even headaches. Many factors contribute to an ongoing problem in many people with TMD including poor sleep, increased stress, neck issues, structural issues in the mouth/jaw, and teeth grinding. It is important to get to the root cause, and usually takes a mutli-disciplinary approach to resolve the issues.
Physical therapy is very effective part of this multidisciplinary approach to the treatment and prevention of further TMJ disorder.
